The earth has been around long before humans, and no matter what we do to it, it will remain long after we are extinct. However, I believe your question was meant to be a little simpler than that. We produce energy by burning natural resources. Coal power plants, oil, natural gas... all go to produce the energy to turn on your light bulb. If you turn that lightbulb on less, and everyone around you does as well. The power plants will have to burn less to produce enough energy to meet everyones demands.
