Making the Case for Metal Water Bottles

Stainless Steel Water Bottles
I’m making the change to metal water bottles, also called stainless steel water bottles. Why, you ask? Two main reasons.
First, and most importantly, I want to contribute to less waste. Water is healthy; I love water and I like to have it with me at all times. What that means is that I go through lots of plastic bottles. I’m constantly sending my kids to school with water bottles too. I’ve been recycling plastic bottles for some time, but the time has come for us to switch to metal water bottles. They can be reused again and again, they help to keep drinks cool, and they come in all kinds of cool colors and designs.
“But, I reuse my water bottles, and I send my kids to school with a plastic thermos,” you say.
And this leads me to the second reason why I’ve decided to switch. There has been a decent amount of press lately about the potential risks of using plastic for drinking and food storage. All of this talk comes from the presence of a potentially harmful chemical, BPA, that is found in many plastics. I’m actually not on to get overly panicked when information like this is released, but when I combined that information with the amount of waste produced by plastic and it just seemed like an obvious choice.
If you decide to make the switch, be sure to use your stainless steel water bottle when you get a drink at a gas station. You can even ask at fast-food restaurants if they would be willing to fill your water bottle instead of giving you a disposable cup. You’d be surprised how many businesses are more than willing to comply with your request.
The bottles can be purchased in about any color or pattern and cost between $10 and $25 a piece. A company called Klean Kanteen has a wide variey of bottles and sizes available. At first glance that seems a little pricey, but they last basically forever so you’ll get your money’s worth in a very short time and still have a bottle to use again and again!

Great idea! I bought a bunch of Klean Kanteen bottles for Christmas gifts this year and everyone loved them. I was also concerned about the BPA so I got a kid size bottle for a two year old on my list
I love that you gave them away as Christmas gifts – what a great (and green!) idea. Kudos to you!!

Hey Folks
This is a great idea that is gaining by leaps and bounds everyday… Everyone needs to Reduce and Recycle! A metal water bottle is a great method for doing so.
I am a camper and a backpacker, so I’ve been carrying water bottles for years. Now, the idea is spreading into our daily lives… Instead of buying the single use, throw away, landfill fodder called a ‘water bottle’… Get yourself a highly re-useable one for use at the office or at school where you can show your style by choosing one that has neat graphics or a color scheme that you love.
