By now, you’ve probably heard of bamboo flooring, and maybe even bamboo counter tops, but have you heard about bamboo bedding? Bamboo sheets, bamboo comforters and other bamboo bedding is available. And there are so many advantages to bamboo that I don’t even know where to start.

Probably the best thing about bamboo is that it has some property that makes it antiseptic. Without going into all the scientific details, back in 2003, there was a test done on bamboo sheets. Basically, they added bacteria to the bamboo bed sheets and then tested to see how much of the bacteria was alive after 24 hours. This is where it gets cool, 99.8% of the bacteria had been killed! What that tells me is that bamboo sheets are extremely healthy. I mean, I’d still wash them more often if my kid had the flu or something, but it’s one heck of a good selling point!

Bamboo Crops

The fact that bamboo is naturally resistant to bacteria means that bamboo crops don’t have to be sprayed with pesticides and other harmful chemicals. Add to that the fact that bamboo is extremely renewable – some types grow up to a foot a day, and you’ve got an extremely sustainable product.

Manufacturers started to realize the benefits of bamboo some time ago and started making flooring and counter tops with it. More recently, some manufacturers have started using the fiber to make bamboo bedding. Bamboo sheet sets are extremely soft and silky without being slippery.

If that’s not enough to get you to give bamboo some serious consideration as a bedding choice, consider this:

~ Bamboo in naturally insulated, which means that the material will help to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

~ You can find a range of Bamboo bedding products, not just sheets. You can also find bamboo duvet and bamboo comforter set. And if you like you can pick up bamboo towels for your bathroom.
~ Bamboo bedding is very affordable. 300 thread count sheets start at about $30 for a set. Like any other sheet, they go up in price depending on a number of factors, but they’re not any more expensive than say, cotton. Sometimes buying eco friendly products can be difficult because of the increased cost of many products, thankfully, that’s not the case with bamboo.

~ Bamboo sheets are available in a wide range of colors, you can buy them to fit your current color scheme.

~ Bamboo bedding

If there’s any drawback to these sheets, it’s that bamboo is, for the most part, grown in China. This means they do have to travel a long way to make it to a store shelf in the United States. After carefully weighing all the pros and cons, I decided bamboo sheets were still an extremely green choice! You’ll have to make that decision for yourself.

I received an interesting email from a reader yesterday asking about natural hair dyes. It’s an important topic, so I’m glad that she emailed!

Traditional hair dyes contain large amounts of chemicals and studies show that those chemicals may be bad for your health. A study that was done by the University of Washington back in 1994 found that women who use hair dye have a 50% higher chance of getting non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Another study, also done in 1994, showed that women who consistently use hair dye have higher incidents of other types of cancer.

So, what’s a girl to do? Many of us dye or highlight our hair because we prefer another color to the one we were born with. Others wait until we start to see gray hair appearing and then use hair dye to go back to our original hair color. Either way, it’s all for the sake of vanity. Truth be told, I’m starting to see a little gray and
it won’t be long before I start to dye my hair to cover it. I do want to know what natural hair dyes are available before I start covering it though.

Thankfully, there are a couple of options available to those of us who want the benefits of hair dye, but aren’t willing or would prefer not to take the health risks associated with traditional hair dye.

First, temporary dyes and color rinses use less harmful products than permanent color does. The problem? They don’t last as long and have to be reapplied often. Most of us are busy and don’t have time to constantly worry about covering gray or coloring our hair.

There are a few companies that have heard our pleas for natural hair dyes and they are starting to respond. If you want a salon-quality dye one of the best options is to visit the EcoColors website. EcoColors creates natural hair dye, available to salon professionals, that is free of the most concerning ingredients that are found in many traditional dyes. A locater on their website allows visitors to find salons in their area that use EcoColor products.

Another option, aimed at those who would like to dye their hair at home, is the dye offered by Advanced Cosmetics. They offer the first 100% plant-based organic hair dye that is also permanent. The company currently only sells products to end users, but is working on a product line that will be available to salon professionals – hopefully soon, you’ll also be able to have your hair dyed with this natural hair dye by your stylist.

If you are considering hair dye, take the time to consider the benefits of natural hair dyes before making your final selection. It’s just one more step in the right direction. And, as always, remember, the personal care product industry is not regulated. Just because a product claims to be natural, doesn’t mean that it is. Read labels carefully and know what you are using on your body and in your hair!
