One thing you are going to find is that green living isn’t just about what we can do to help our planet, but it is also something which will help peoples over all health. One thing that a lot of individuals don’t understand is that as our planet becomes more and more polluted every day, and the health of the individuals that live in the world is also going to be effected. Here we are going to be talking about a few things that will be able to help both our own health and the planet at the same time.

One thing that more and more individuals should stop using is disposable plastic products as well as disposable Styrofoam, plastics and Styrofoam products are a small number of things that can take thousands of years to decompose. This means that each time someone places a plastic bag or Styrofoam container in their garbage and it ends up in our land fills, we are contaminating the earth. One of the largest culprits are the grocery stores as they use plastic bags now as opposed to paper bags, of course some stores will still enable you to ask for paper bags and if you do use the paper bags be sure you recycle them. Or even better, you could get the reusable canvass totes for your shopping.

You can also start to plant trees as well as other types of plants, regularly to help re-build their population. Our world is consuming a lot more trees every year than we’re planting. If you consider it, if we keep using more trees than we plant each and every year, in time there will be no trees left in the world. For us to keep the tree population where it ought to be, everybody should be planting a minimum of one tree a month. You need to also realize that when there are less and less trees in the world, that also means that the volume of oxygen in our air will also be reduced every year.

One more thing you ought to start doing is to start using as many organic and naturally developed products as you can. The fantastic thing about consuming organic foods is that farmers are not going to need to use as many pesticides and chemicals that wind up in our air, soil and also in the foods we consume. You have to understand that pesticides are a poison to kill insects and when these chemical compounds enter our bodies it is still a poison that can do damage to our health. Then when ever possible, you ought to only be purchasing products which have been made or grown using only organic methods.

Saving our earth in addition to our health is a thing that every single person is accountable for. If everybody was to do their part you would realize that the health of our planet and our personal health would both benefit from these kinds of efforts. Obviously you additionally have to realize that if people don’t start taking care of our planet, in time it will no longer be able to sustain life.

You may not have known this, but more pesticides are used on cotton than any other crop in the world!! It’s a proven fact that the pesticides used on cotton are harmful for the environment. They may very well be harmful to human health as well. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that at least 7 of the top 15 chemicals used on cotton crops are “likely” or “known” human carcinogens. Because I try to do what’s right for the earth, and because I prefer to stay healthy myself, this knowledge doesn’t thrill me.

I can’t give up cotton, I simply can’t do it! I wear cotton all the time…my kids wear cotton all the time. We’re a laid back, casual sort of family and we MUST have our cotton.

Enter Organic Cotton Clothing! Thankfully, there are now a growing number of cotton farmers that grow organic cotton. These farmers grow their organic cotton crops under extremely strict guidelines, so besides just growing their crops without the use of harmful pesticides, they also deal with things like soil erosion and nutrient depletion.

Look for USDA Organic Cotton

The best news is that Organic Cotton items are really not much more expensive than cotton that is treated with pesticides.

All is well in my home again, now that we know we can wear our cotton while doing the right thing for the environment at the same time. If you’re interested in making the change to organic cotton, just look for the 100% organic label on cotton clothing or sheets that you are considering purchasing.

Bamboo Sheets

By now, you’ve probably heard of bamboo flooring, and maybe even bamboo counter tops, but have you heard about bamboo bedding? Bamboo sheets, bamboo comforters and other bamboo bedding is available. And there are so many advantages to bamboo that I don’t even know where to start.

Probably the best thing about bamboo is that it has some property that makes it antiseptic. Without going into all the scientific details, back in 2003, there was a test done on bamboo sheets. Basically, they added bacteria to the bamboo bed sheets and then tested to see how much of the bacteria was alive after 24 hours. This is where it gets cool, 99.8% of the bacteria had been killed! What that tells me is that bamboo sheets are extremely healthy. I mean, I’d still wash them more often if my kid had the flu or something, but it’s one heck of a good selling point!

Bamboo Crops

The fact that bamboo is naturally resistant to bacteria means that bamboo crops don’t have to be sprayed with pesticides and other harmful chemicals. Add to that the fact that bamboo is extremely renewable – some types grow up to a foot a day, and you’ve got an extremely sustainable product.

Manufacturers started to realize the benefits of bamboo some time ago and started making flooring and counter tops with it. More recently, some manufacturers have started using the fiber to make bamboo bedding. Bamboo sheet sets are extremely soft and silky without being slippery.

If that’s not enough to get you to give bamboo some serious consideration as a bedding choice, consider this:

~ Bamboo in naturally insulated, which means that the material will help to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

~ You can find a range of Bamboo bedding products, not just sheets. You can also find bamboo duvet and bamboo comforter set. And if you like you can pick up bamboo towels for your bathroom.
~ Bamboo bedding is very affordable. 300 thread count sheets start at about $30 for a set. Like any other sheet, they go up in price depending on a number of factors, but they’re not any more expensive than say, cotton. Sometimes buying eco friendly products can be difficult because of the increased cost of many products, thankfully, that’s not the case with bamboo.

~ Bamboo sheets are available in a wide range of colors, you can buy them to fit your current color scheme.

~ Bamboo bedding

If there’s any drawback to these sheets, it’s that bamboo is, for the most part, grown in China. This means they do have to travel a long way to make it to a store shelf in the United States. After carefully weighing all the pros and cons, I decided bamboo sheets were still an extremely green choice! You’ll have to make that decision for yourself.

For more information about Bamboo sheets visit:

Bamboo Sheets

My friends and family know that I’m all about being “green.” As a result, I’m often asked about what changes they can make in their lives, quickly and easily, that will make them more green.

Here’s ten QUICK and EASY things you can do to become more green right away.

1. Start Composting. It’s easy, it’s free, and it saves money and energy.

2. Start recycling. This is really as easy as getting a few bins to hold different types of recyclables and then finding out where/how to drop them off.

3. Change your light bulbs from regular incandescent bulbs to CFL’s. You’ll save money and your light bulbs will last longer.

4. Start washing your clothes using cold water. Very little of what we need to wash actually has to be washed in hot water and many manufacturers make laundry detergent designed to work in cold water.

5. Start a garden. If it’s winter where you live, start a herb garden indoors. It’s easy, fun, and you’ll eventually save money on all the spices or vegetables you buy.

6. Install aerators on all of the faucets in your home. These cost a few dollars each, are easy to install, and will save lots of water.

7. Make it a habit to turn off water and lights when you aren’t using them. Teach your children to do the same.

8. Put appliances and other items on surge strips – this way you can turn the entire strip off when you aren’t using them. Many items in your home use electricity even when you aren’t using them.

9. Turn your heat down a few degrees all the time. Wear warmer clothes when you are in the house. If you have a timer on your thermostat, program the heat to turn down when you are sleeping and when no one is at home. Do the same thing with the air conditioning in the summer. If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, invest in one – they are not expensive, and you’ll get your money back in savings on your electric bill.

10. Sit down and figure out how you can drive less. Make it a point to combine trips and to plan your outings so you don’t spend all of your time driving around and wasting gas. Consider carpooling to work or having your children carpool to school. Almost all of us can figure out at least a few ways to reduce the amount of time that we are on the road.

Let us know what you’re doing to become more green!
