Natural Hair Dyes

I received an interesting email from a reader yesterday asking about natural hair dyes. It’s an important topic, so I’m glad that she emailed!

Traditional hair dyes contain large amounts of chemicals and studies show that those chemicals may be bad for your health. A study that was done by the University of Washington back in 1994 found that women who use hair dye have a 50% higher chance of getting non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Another study, also done in 1994, showed that women who consistently use hair dye have higher incidents of other types of cancer.

So, what’s a girl to do? Many of us dye or highlight our hair because we prefer another color to the one we were born with. Others wait until we start to see gray hair appearing and then use hair dye to go back to our original hair color. Either way, it’s all for the sake of vanity. Truth be told, I’m starting to see a little gray and
it won’t be long before I start to dye my hair to cover it. I do want to know what natural hair dyes are available before I start covering it though.

Thankfully, there are a couple of options available to those of us who want the benefits of hair dye, but aren’t willing or would prefer not to take the health risks associated with traditional hair dye.

First, temporary dyes and color rinses use less harmful products than permanent color does. The problem? They don’t last as long and have to be reapplied often. Most of us are busy and don’t have time to constantly worry about covering gray or coloring our hair.

And, as always, remember, the personal care product industry is not regulated. Just because a product claims to be natural, doesn’t mean that it is. Read labels carefully and know what you are using on your body and in your hair!
