If you’ve ever dreamed of working from home, this might be the time to do it. In many situations, working from home is a great alternative for both employer and employee. Why? You cost your employer much more than a paycheck. Let’s say you work for Company X, who employs 5,000 employees. Your company has 4 offices throughout the United States and all employees report to an office to work each day. Now, let’s pretend that your company decides to send 2,500 employees home to work. They close one office, and downsize two others. They’re paying the 2,500 employees that work from home the same amount of money, but you are no longer taking up space in an office that they are paying for. You aren’t using their facilities, their electricity, etc.

There is also some data that shows that employees who work from home are more productive than those who spend each day in an office. I don’t know if this has to do with the absence of the office water cooler or what, but that’s what they say. Personally, I’ve worked from home and I’ve worked in an office.

And…working from home is a great way to promote green living. Employees that telecommute are not driving to work each day, therefore, those employees and their respective employers, are contributing less to air pollution and foreign dependency on oil.

For many, the idea of working from home, or telecommuting, seems like a dream…I don’t think it has to be. If you would like to work from home, and you think that you’d be a good candidate to be approved for it, it can’t hurt to talk to your boss about it. Just make sure that you have your case well planned and are prepared to answer questions regarding productivity. You’ll also want to be prepared to talk about communication, ie. how you plan to communicate with others while working from home. It’s probably a good thing if you currently have a good attendance record, high marks on recent performance evaluations, and are known as a productive employee in your workplace.

If your boss doesn’t go for it right away, don’t get discouraged. You’ve planted the seed and you never know when it might start to grow. Also remember that your current boss doesn’t have to be your future boss for ever and you are free to take your skills to any company you’d like. If working from home is your dream, then keep your eyes open for possible new opportunities and employers that promote telecommuting. In the end, we’re all responsible for our own destiny.

Do you work for a company that promotes working from home? We’d love to hear about it. Do they promote it for green living reasons, financial reasons, employee morale? Tell us about your work from home experience!
